starting running

This is an ideal start running class for most people. It follows a Couch to 5k plan (C25k) and acts as a perfect springboard to develop your running further if you wish.

By the end of the nine week program your physical capabilities and fitness will build, and you’ll be able to run for 30 mins or 5k.

I have taken complete couch potatoes through this program before, but I do recommend that you should be able to walk for 30 minutes at a brisk pace (one that leaves you slightly short of breath) before starting.

If you feel that you need help with your fitness before trying this I also have a walking for fitness and health program.

If you have any health issues that you think might affect your ability to exercise, we recommend that you talk to your doctor before starting. If you tell them you are planning to start a gradual, progressive exercise plan, they are likely to encourage you on your way.

At your first session, you will aim to alternate 60 seconds of walking and 90 seconds of jogging, with a warm-up at the beginning and a cool-down at the end.

By the end of the 9 week block, you should be able to jog continuously for 30 minutes.
